I know that over the past two years I learned that it is really about how much you burn which helps dictate how much you lose.  I limited my calories and exercised and it actually worked!  Why I didn’t learn that while I was younger – I have no idea.  But better late then never.  Exercising really does make you feel better, clears the mind and gives you more energy.
